Winter Solstice comes to the Northern Hemisphere, as seen by EUMETSAT’s Meteosat-9 satellite from its geosynchronous orbit 22,369 miles over Africa.

The Winter Solstice (or Summer, if you are in the Southern Hemisphere) happens tomorrow morning at 5:30 AM UTC. The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the apparent movement of the Sun from Earth seems to come to a stop in our sky, before reversing direction (image credit: NASA/EUMETSAT).
